Day Six: Sanctuary in Dallas, TX

Six days out from Bennington, VT, we Four Amigos are hardened road warriors. We've averaged four hundred miles a day, crossed 15 states, and driven five over the speed limit in all of them. After all this law-breaking, it's time for a rest. Thank goodness we're in Texas, where outlaws like us have always found sanctuary, and thank goodness we're at the Loegering Ranch, where good times and good company are in abundance. The Four Amigos were made for Dallas.

The Ocho woke up first this morning and went for a run by White Rock Lake while the rest of us slept in. At a comfortable 11AM, The Ocho, The Captain, and LT2 woke up their ever-sleepy compadre for waffle breakfast, courtesy of Wes Loegering. What a fabulous way to start the day/afternoon.

After a quick stop at Good 2 Go Taco, which shares its building with a bar -- well done there -- we visited the Sixth Floor Museum, which remembers JFK's assassination in 1963. Located in the Depository Building, on the floor from which Oswald scoped the Presidential motorcade, the Museum covers JFK's life and presidency up until his trip to Dallas, the assassination itself, and the international response. We spent three hours in the museum. If you're going through Dallas anytime soon, we highly recommend you check it out.

After the Sixth Floor, we walked through the 95 degree heat to the Nasher sculpture museum for a quick look, then back to the car for a stop at Rusty Taco before returning to the Loegering Ranch. While The Ocho picked up some groceries and Johnny went for a run, LT2 and The Captain held down the fort and turned on the Celtics game. A great Boston victory was enjoyed along with some very welcome local beers.

It was a restful day here in Dallas, and we're so grateful to the Loegerings for their hospitality over the last two days. These Four Amigos still have half the country to go, and we couldn't have found a better mid-point than this. Tomorrow, we go on the run again with a long shot from here to Santa Fe, NM before continuing on to the Grand Canyon. It'll be hard to leave the safe haven we've found here, but Monterey is calling, and we road warriors have got some road warrior-ing to do... as the saying goes.

If you don't hear from us for the next few days, it's because we're camping away from internet. It's not because we've been attacked by bears.

  1. Hope you guys aren't forgetting to say "[state name]...just like I pitchured it" every time you cross a border. Sounds like you're having a blast!
